ekg is an abbreviation for electrocardiogram, which measures electrical activity of the heart. It’s in honor of my Fasha, who entered entrepreneurship in the seventies with an ekg monitoring company that serviced Chicagoland. It seemed like he knew everything about the heart, physiologically and emotionally. I lost him to a single electrical misfire that led to cardiac arrest. His loss induced an autoimmune disease in me, and three years later, I was finally diagnosed with Graves’ disease. Through the health challenges, I was kept afloat by my partner, my family, and my girl friends. Chosen sisterhood is sacred to me, and the name ekg is also inspired by my two MOHs; together we make Emily, Kristen, and Grace. Through grade school and high school, to different colleges and living in different states, we have supported, connected, and loved each other through the many years of friendship. ekg is inspired by the love in my heart, the world’s need for more human connection, and in honor of my favorite person to ever live. ekg is so much more than my candle business; it’s a huge piece of my heart and being materialized.
I came up with Connection Candles as a Galentine’s Day gift for long distance friends, so we could connect more consistently. And the more I focused on IRL friendships, the more disillusioned I became with social media. I want the focus to shift to the life and people around you, not the strangers on IG/TikTok. I want to see people for who they are, not the carefully curated version they want me to see. I want to see people living and sharing their lives authentically and from their hearts. Stop caring what people think of you, because the real ones don’t mind you being you.
My mom has always told me to stay true to myself, and that advice keeps me consistent and most importantly to me, altruistic. Lead with love, be yourself, and communicate from the heart.

I’m Em, the creator and owner of ekg. from the heart. Relationships have always been vital to my well-being, along with being a part of the community. My Fasha always pushed us to be “contributing members to society,” but I was lost without his guidance. It was through my love and yearning for my family and friends that I created ekg, and it was the support and unconditional love from my partner that it came to fruition. With ekg and the concept of Connection Candles, I’ve created my own little corner of the world radiating with love and positivity, and I’ll work hard every day to have a positive impact here, for myself and everyone I love.
